Intelligent Design in court Printer-friendly copy

Religion and science have clashed again recently over arguments about how evolution is taught in America’s state schools. With the population evenly split in the creation versus evolution debate, it would clearly be wrong to bias education in favor of either side.

Extract from The Guardian newspaper ( 27 th September, 2005)

Opposing theories

Creationism
Literal interpretation of the account in Genesis. The earth was created about 6,000 years ago, with all forms of life in their current form.

Intelligent design
Accepts the earth is millions of years old and that species can change. But living things show such complexity, a guiding hand must be at work.

Evolution
Darwin’s theory that modern species evolved from basic forms of life as a result of natural selection: random genetic mutation leading to species variation, with only variants adapted to the environment able to survive.

At the root of the problem is the common assumption that the evolution of life has been proved and that chance alone accounts for the existence of all living things. As a result, education in schools portrays ‘evolution’ as a fact and fails to mention any gaps in the theory or any alternative views. Those who oppose the assumption that evolution is true believe that life on earth is far too complex to be explained by random genetic mutation and therefore a guiding force must be involved.

Led by the proponents of the case for ‘Intelligent Design’, it will be up to the American courts to decide whether school children will be allowed to “keep an open mind” on the subject of the origin of life, by hearing all the current arguments fully aired in the classroom. But whatever the lawyers decide about education in American schools, it seems most unlikely that weaknesses in the theory of evolution will be properly publicized by the world’s media.

While the arguments in favor of ‘Intelligent Design’ get stronger as more is discovered about the complexity of life, the ‘random chance’ view of life gets even weaker.

The Hidden Face of God
In a book entitled “The Hidden Face of God” by Gerald L Schroeder, the author find reasons to believe that the complexity of living things not only reveals the need for a ‘guiding hand’ behind their development, it also suggests that wisdom itself is built into the fabric of all creation. Everything that lives is more than the sum-total of the atoms and molecules of which it is made. This in-built wisdom, says the author, is the driving force of life itself.

This view echoes the Bible’s claim about the wisdom and guidance that God gives to his creation:

“O Lord, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.” (Psal;ms 104v24)

The Aramaic version of the first words in the Bible confirms the central role that God’s wisdom plays in making living things behave more intelligently than the simple chemicals from which we are all made. It reads as follows:

“With wisdom God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1v1)

To quote Gerald Schroeder,

“Wisdom, information, an idea, is the link between the metaphysical Creator and the physical creation. It is the hidden face of God.”

Seeing the ‘face of God’ in the world we live in is not as difficult as it may seem. But now that the theory of evolution has been challenged scientifically, support for the ‘intelligent design’ argument will inevitably grow.

Upon reflection, perhaps more people will take the 'intelligent design' argument to its logical conclusion and accept that the Bible’s claim about God being this world’s creator has been right all along.
