At the root of the problem is the common assumption that the evolution of life has been proved and that chance alone accounts for the existence of all living things. As a result, education in schools portrays ‘evolution’ as a fact and fails to mention any gaps in the theory or any alternative views. Those who oppose the assumption that evolution is true believe that life on earth is far too complex to be explained by random genetic mutation and therefore a guiding force must be involved. Led by the proponents of the case for ‘Intelligent Design’, it will be up to the American courts to decide whether school children will be allowed to “keep an open mind” on the subject of the origin of life, by hearing all the current arguments fully aired in the classroom. But whatever the lawyers decide about education in American schools, it seems most unlikely that weaknesses in the theory of evolution will be properly publicized by the world’s media. While the arguments in favor of ‘Intelligent Design’ get stronger as more is discovered about the complexity of life, the ‘random chance’ view of life gets even weaker.
This view echoes the Bible’s claim about the wisdom and guidance that God gives to his creation:
The Aramaic version of the first words in the Bible confirms the central role that God’s wisdom plays in making living things behave more intelligently than the simple chemicals from which we are all made. It reads as follows:
To quote Gerald Schroeder,
Seeing the ‘face of God’ in the world we live in is not as difficult as it may seem. But now that the theory of evolution has been challenged scientifically, support for the ‘intelligent design’ argument will inevitably grow. Upon reflection, perhaps more people will take the 'intelligent design' argument to its logical conclusion and accept that the Bible’s claim about God being this world’s creator has been right all along. |
