Light on a new world

Cover from Light magazineThis cover picture on a recent copy of the Light magazine shows two of the most well known features of the African landscape. The diversity of wildlife in Africa includes this graceful giraffe, which is the tallest mammal in the world at up to 10 feet (2.7 metres) at the shoulders and 18 feet to its head (5.5 metres). In the background we can see Mount Kilimanjaro towering above the landscape, the highest mountain in Africa at 19,340 feet (5,895 metres).

The mountain is in reality a series of extinct volcanos, the highest of which is Kibo, which has a permanent covering of ice and snow. Kibo has a crater which is1.2 miles (2 Km) across and nearly 1,000 feet (300 metres) deep and the inner cone still shows signs of residual volcanic activity. It is situated in northeastern Tanzania near its border with Kenya. The mountain and its surrounding forests are designated a game reserve, which is home to a variety of trees, plants, and a diversity of wildlife.

Although we marvel at the grandeur and permanence of mountains, this is nothing compared with the greatness of God who created all things. The Psalmist tells us:

‘Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever you had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God’
[Psalm 90.2 NKJV].

In comparison to this, our lives are as nothing, for the Psalmist continues:

‘The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labour and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away’
[Psalm 90.10 NKJV].

On the other hand, each of us has the opportunity to learn about God the Creator and His plan for this world as communicated in His written word the Bible. The prayer of the Psalmist is one that we should follow:

‘So teach us to number our days, That we gain a heart of wisdom’
[Psalm 90.12 NKJV]
