Mir Space Station

After spending fifteen years floating some 250 miles above the earth, the Mir Space Station made its final voyage back to earth. Most of it burned up as it re-entered the earth’s atmosphere, the debris splashing into the South Pacific.

The amazing thing is that, despite fears that debris from Mir would fall on populated areas of Japan, this did not happen. The remains came down in the sea as predicted by Russian scientists. How did they manage to achieve this? They relied on the laws of the universe which keep the earth in a set orbit around the sun. This enabled the scientists to calculate precisely the point of re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere and fire the rocket booster at precisely the right time.

These laws of the universe speak of design and order. The Bible directs us to consider the designer and Creator of this vast universe. David, the Psalmist wrote:

‘The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament (sky) shows his handiwork.’ [Psalm 19.1 NKJV]

The heavens, described as God’s dwelling place, and earth, his footstool, are used as Bible symbols. If we accept God as the Creator, we will echo the words of a prophet of Israel:

‘Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power…There is nothing too hard for You.’ [Jeremiah 32.17 NKJV]
